The Administration building of the Marcellus Community Schools was the victim of a downed tree during the Monday, June 13, storm that caused significant damage throughout the area.
The board of education met on June 13 for their regular meeting. The meeting concluded just minutes before a major weather event roared through the village. Fortunately, all members and school staff made it home safely, though it took considerable time for some to reach their homes due to the significant number of downed trees blocking roads.
Storm damage at the school was significant and included two toppled light poles at the high school parking lot, several fallen trees, and a broken elementary school window. The administration, technology, maintenance, and soccer dugout structures all sustained damage from winds, uprooted trees or flying debris. In addition, several buildings endured some degree of roof damage, and a few rooftop air conditioning units were impacted. The middle school and Volinia were left without power for a day, while the rest of the district’s power was uninterrupted.
Storm clean-up is underway. I appreciate the efforts of our maintenance crew who worked through high temperatures to assess the damages and clear debris.
Before the storm and the board meeting’s conclusion, several important agenda items were approved. New textbook series for elementary math, K-12 science, and World History were approved for purchase. Those resources include Envision Math, K-4 Mystery Science, grade 5-8 Elevate Science, Miller Biology, Experience Physics, and History Alive! The board also approved contract and membership renewals with Chartwells food service, the Michigan Association of School Boards and the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
