March 17, 1941 ~ February 25 2024
Kay Holmes of Marcellus passed away on February 25, 2024, just a few days short of her 83rd birthday after a long struggle with both cancer and dementia.
She was born on March 17, 1941 in Owosso, Michigan to Gustin and Edna Greenwald. After graduating from Owosso High School in 1959, Kay went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University. She taught elementary school in Waterford, MI briefly until she married the love of her life and moved across the state to Marcellus. Kay spent the majority of her career working in the Marcellus Community School system as an elementary teacher. A favorite teacher to many, she taught Kindergarten, First, and Fifth grades. Teaching was Kay’s passion and it truly brought joy to her life. In addition to her teaching career, Kay poured her heart and soul into the family business, The Nip N Tuck Tavern. Many remember her working behind the bar, waiting tables, and doing just about anything that needed to attention at the local restaurant.
She will be missed by her family and many friends and will be remembered as a special teacher, a wonderful mother and grandmother, a gifted gabber, talented artist and crafter, a voracious reader (especially romance novels), a consummate worry-wart, and for those lucky enough to have had a taste, the queen of coffee cakes.
Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Gary (Mike) Holmes, as well as her parents, Gus and Edna Greenwald, parents-in-law Oliver and Alice Holmes (Ayers), and sister-in-law, Charlotte Hyman (Holmes). She is survived by her older brother, Ross Greenwald (Pat), her two sons, Spencer (Stacy) and Andrew (Barb), four grandchildren, Ellie, Megan, Emma, and Carson Holmes, sister-in-law Ann Simmons (Holmes), and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Kay’s life is planned for Saturday, May 11 from 3pm – 4:30pm at the Marcellus Township Library. Memorial donations may be made in Kay’s name to the Marcellus Township Library.
