This week, we’re highlighting two adult fiction books and one children’s book.
A Mother Would Know by Amber Garza. Widowed Valerie lives alone in a large Victorian house rumored to be haunted because a tragedy occurred there decades earlier. Her daughter worries about Valerie’s forgetfulness. In response, Valerie invites her adult son to move home, but her hopes that they could rebuild the closeness they once shared are marred by his moodiness and unexplained absences. When a young woman is found murdered near Valerie’s home, suspicion falls on her son without evidence that he committed the crime. Although compelled to defend her son, she begins to question everything she knows about him. The author combines high drama with a fast-paced plot, weaving in issues such as aging, sibling rivalry, and the shadow of past mistakes that most readers will find relatable.
The Seamstress of Sardinia by Bianca Pitzorno. Set on the island of Sardinia at the end of the 19th century, the book follows the life of a talented, tenderhearted, ambitious young sewer from humble beginnings to securing a seamstress position with a wealthy family. Through her eyes, the reader learns about the villagers and all aspects of their lives and watches the child grow into a kind-hearted, modest, independent young woman. This book is rich in atmosphere, period detail, and compelling characters.
Butterflies & Moths: 100 Facts Series by Steve Parker. Written for children aged 7 and older, this book takes an in-depth look at the extraordinary lives of butterflies and moths. The photographs and artwork, activities, quizzes and cartoons are fun and challenging for children, encouraging them to read from start to finish.
