After three decades of not playing in a playoff game, the Lions have now hosted and won two in a row! This team is on a roll, and they are now playing on Sunday to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. How do they stack up to the 49ers and do they have a chance of winning?
So let’s recap Sunday’s game before we talk about this Sunday. The Lions hosted the Bucs Sunday and came away with a 31-23 victory. The Lions were able to contain a red hot Baker Mayfield. The biggest question mark around this Lion’s team is their defense, more specifically their pass defense. In the game against the Rams, Stafford threw for over 300 yards and so did Baker. Both teams have very prolific passing attacks and very physical receivers, and the Bucs in particular didn’t really have any rushing game to speak of. But we saw that defensive line come through with some timely sacks and turnovers. The win over the Bucs didn’t shock me because I thought the Rams were a better, hotter team so I expected them to win and other Lions teams would have found a way to lose, but not this one!
The Lions travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers. The 9ers have been a fantastic team all season. They have a quarterback in Purdy, who plays within that system perfectly. Add into the equation my MVP pick Christian McCaffrey, who not only wakes up and gets 100 yards rushing, but has almost 100 yards receiving every game. George Kittle is one of the best tight ends in the game but their receiving corps might be a bit banged up with Deebo Samuel getting dinged up last week so we shall see if he plays or not. Their defense has been rather suspect in their defense of the run which leads right into the Lions favor. This team has relied on the run game not only to gain yards toting the rock but also in the play action game.
With all that being said, the Lions opened as a 7 point underdog. Now don’t get me wrong, on paper the 49ers are a better team but not that much. I honestly think this game is going to be a lower scoring but close game. The fact that Aaron Jones rushed for over 100 yards against them last week leads me to believe that Gibbs and Montgomery are going to have quite a day on the ground. Goff has been playing unbelievably and very consistent. If he doesn’t turn the ball over against this ball hawking 49ers defense this team has a chance! Honestly, I think this Lions team has way more than a chance and it wouldn’t shock me if they indeed steal a win in San Fran! If you are a betting person I would get your bet in soon before that line moves!
