Philip Scott Hinkle, known affectionately as Phil to his friends and family, passed away on March 28, 2025, after a courageous battle with a long illness. Born on August 4, 1949, in Niles, Michigan, Phil’s journey through life was marked by his thoughtfulness, friendliness, and handy nature. He departed this life at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family, leaving a legacy of kindness, hard work, and cherished memories.

Phil’s early years were spent in the community of Buchanan, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed the values that would guide his life. A proud graduate of Buchanan High School in 1968, Phil’s pursuit of education did not stop there. He furthered his studies at Southwestern Michigan College and simultaneously dedicated himself to a 4-year apprenticeship at Weldon International, specializing in tool and die, culminating in his graduation in 1973.

The year 1974 marked an adventurous chapter for Phil, who traveled to Alaska with friends Dave Handley and Ron Marbieter. Upon his return, he co-founded Dign Juven Tree Service with lifelong friend David Handley. In 1976, Phil’s career path took him back to his roots in the tool and die industry, where he became a respected figure at Capitol Tooling. His career later included positions at Hess MAE and JAC Custom Pouches. Phil’s work ethic and skill were matched only by his friendliness and willingness to lend a hand.

An avid outdoorsman, Phil found solace and excitement in hunting and fishing. He treasured the annual fishing trips with his son Josh and other family members, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Phil’s hunting and fishing expeditions with friends were filled with joy, companionship, and unforgettable stories. Beyond the thrill of the catch or the hunt, Phil truly valued the time spent with those he cared about, whether in the peacefulness of nature or the comfort of his home. Beyond his outdoor pursuits, Phil was a devoted Michigan Wolverines fan, taking great joy in watching the games and cheering on his team.

Phil’s legacy is carried on by his beloved son, Joshua Hinkle of Marcellus, Michigan; his stepdaughter, Gretchen (Blowers) Smith of Lawton, Michigan; and his stepson, Jason Blowers of Bangor, Michigan. his brother, David Hinkle, Winter Haven, Florida. His step-grandchildren, Tyler and Melissa Smith, and great-grandson, Huck Hagen, will forever hold dear the memories and lessons from their time with Phil. Phil also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews who will miss his gentle guidance and humor.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Hinkle and Gladys (Dame) Hinkle; his sister, Kathleen Dospoy; his brother, Paul Hinkle; and his nephew, Michael Simpson. Their reunion marks a continuation of the family’s strong bond, transcending the boundaries of life and death. To describe Phil as thoughtful, friendly, and handy would only scratch the surface of the man he was. His kindness touched the lives of many, and his ability to fix and create was a gift he generously shared. Phil’s presence was a source of comfort, and his companionship a source of joy. Phil’s departure from this world leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. As we bid farewell to Philip Scott Hinkle, we do so with gratitude for our time with him and the assurance that his memory will be treasured forever.
