The State of the NBA Finals

May 24, 2022 By Ryan "Turbo" Jackson Leave a Comment

Well if you have followed me or my podcast for any amount of time you know my love/hate relationship with the NBA.  I used to be a huge Michael Jordan fan going up and that led to me picking players that I used to follow and was never a huge fan of one team which might be a reason why I lost track of things.  Between that and just the overall play in the league has not left a good taste in my mouth.  I love college basketball but I can’t really get into the NBA but this year’s playoffs have been kind of tantalizing to be honest.  There have been blow outs followed by blow outs the other way so it has been hard to make picks.

For those of you who are like me, the playoffs are into the conference championship series which means the two teams that win play in the championship.  We have the Warriors and the Mavs in the west and the Celtics and Heat in the West.  I have been following this year’s playoffs because I have become a huge Luka Doncic fan so I guess my fandom hasn’t changed since I tend to gravitate to single players.  The downfall is that as I write this the Mavs and Luka are down 0-3 to Steph Curry and the Warriors.  However, it is neat to see that the Warriors are back to their normal selves after having just missed the playoffs last year and being a lottery team the year previous.  I have a feeling that if Green and Curry had not had injuries during the season this team would have steamrolled most teams and held the number one seed in the west and you might have seen Steph win the MVP so it doesn’t come to any surprise to me that they are indeed this good and looking to add another title to their resume.  Even with Luka playing at an extremely high level they are just out manned and I have a very good feeling that the Warriors will advance and most likely sweep the Mavs.

On the other side we actually have a series.  The Heat lead the series 2-1 with a game Monday in Boston.  This series has been a showcase of injuries.  It seems as if both teams have had major players go down with a number of different injuries.  That makes this series so hard to call.  Jimmy Butler of the Heat is the key factor.  His health is the X factor hands down.  If he is healthy I think the Heat will have the advantage but the Celtics are one of the best defensive teams in the league and in my opinion would be the biggest test for the Warriors in the finals.  But if both teams are healthy, and I know at this point in the season is almost impossible, but even with the deficit I am leaning towards Boston to represent the east in the finals.

Even though this wasn’t Luka’s year I don’t think this is the last time we will seem him this far in the playoffs.  If you haven’t had the chance to watch him please do.  The way he plays is at a different level and at a different speed than anyone else.  But since it is still this season, my prediction for the finals is Warriors vs Celtics and if that does happen, even with the amazing defense the C’s play I don’t see anyone stopping the wagon that is the Golden State Warriors.
