Turbo Talk Sports: Does Happy Gilmore 2 Stink?

July 29, 2025 By Ryan "Turbo" Jackson Leave a Comment

I know we are on the fringe area of sports with this article, and I am venturing into a whole other world with movie reviews but what the heck.  Let’s give it a shot!  I grew up loving every single Adam Sandler movie that came out.  Billy Madison was a banger.  Big Daddy was my absolute favorite, and the Wedding Singer was amazing and The Waterboy had its moments.  I mean it was good but for sure not my favorite, but then there was Happy Gilmore.  It is hard to believe that Sandler dropped all 5 of these within a four-year span.

It blows my mind that there are 29 years between the two Happy Gilmore movies.  It fit nicely into the Sandler universe because it was a light-hearted, funny, but still garnered your attention.  For those that don’t know the plot here is a summary.  A kid grows up wanting to be a hockey player but stinks at hockey.  His grandma’s house is going to be auctioned off so after learning he can drive the golf ball 400 plus yards he takes his talent to the PGA Tour to earn money to buy back his grandma’s house only to encounter Shooter McGavin on the final day of the PGA Tour Championship.  Now there are for sure twists and turns throughout the movie, but you can tell it has Sandler’s influence all over it.  It was funny, silly, and told a story.

Now, 29 years later the sequel comes out on Netflix.  I have to admit, I hardly ever like sequels.  99% of the time they way over do the comedy and they turn out horrible.  Sandler knew he had to stay true to form to make the sequel successful.  I won’t go into much detail on the actual movie because I don’t want to spoil anything, but the storyline is actually pretty realistic.  Certain things in the movie have actually happened, however exaggerated, but it is still going on.  He has as many original characters in the sequel as he could.  Chubbs, played by Carl Weathers, has since passed away so Sandler admitted he had to rewrite parts of the script because Chubbs has passed.

The biggest take away most people have had after watching is the amount of cameo appearances that are made.  It is a star-studded cast, from actual PGA and LIV golf pros and other celebrities mixed in.  I thought this made the whole aura of the movie even better.  Others found it to be annoying and forced.  I thought each of their parts were well written but as you can imagine every golf pro isn’t an actor day one.

So, after all of that, what do I think about the flick?  I am glad it came out on Netflix.  If I had to pay to go see it that might have changed my outlook on things.  But since I could watch it from my couch and not spend any additional money to see it, I give it two thumbs up.  If you enjoyed the original, you will like the sequel.  I will say that if you go into it expecting it to be the best comedy ever, you will be disappointed.  But Happy Gilmore 2 fits perfectly into the Sandler universe.  That being said, if you like the 5 movies mentioned above, I highly recommend watching it.  If you are not a Sandman fan, then I highly doubt this will change your mind.
