3rd Street closing north of US-12 in Niles, Monday, August 5

COLOMA, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to move to the next phase of the $27 million investment to rebuild the US-12/M-51 interchange in Niles, Berrien County.

Starting Monday, Aug. 5, weather permitting, 3rd Street will be closed on the north side of the US-12 intersection, between US-12 and Beeson Road, and no traffic will be permitted from US-12 to northbound 3rd Street, or from southbound 3rd Street to US-12. The closure is expected to last until Monday, Aug. 19.

The detour for the north side of the 3rd Street intersection with US-12 will be on M-51, Fort Street, and 3rd Street for access to the area between US-12 and Fort Street.

The south side of the 3rd Street intersection will remain open, allowing for southbound 3rd Street traffic, and either left or right turns at US-12.

Work at the intersection of 3rd Street and US-12 will include pavement removal, milling, base replacement, drainage improvements, curb work, traffic signal upgrades, paving, and work on the non-motorized path adjacent to the intersection.

Work also is continuing along the US-12 and M-51 corridors through Niles. Current work on northbound M-51 includes pavement removal, excavation, base replacement, drainage improvements, curb replacement, sidewalk improvements, concrete patching, and paving. Current US-12 work includes paving, restoration, and shoulder construction.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 383 jobs.
