Freshman Marching Band Basics
9th grade band members will be meeting on Friday, July 31 at the high school for an introduction to marching fundamentals.  We will work from 8am-Noon.  This meeting is designed to help freshmen feel more comfortable before meeting with the full band the first day of camp.  You will learn all of the basic marching band techniques and start learning how to read Drill Charts.

● Tips for basics?
○ Bring your instrument.

○ Wear clothes that are comfortable; old shoes that you aren’t afraid to get

dirty; hat, sunglasses.

○ Bug spray, sunscreen, water bottle, snacks for break time.

Marching Band Camp
● Camp runs from August 10-14, Monday through Thursday, 8am-4pm and Friday 8am-2pm.  Band camp is mandatory.

● Bring snacks and water.  We will have water and lemonade available.  Day time snacks and breakfast items are NOT available.

● Lunch: WILL BE PROVIDED.  If you don’t like hamburgers, chicken tenders, pulled pork or pizza you can always bring your own lunch.  We will have refrigerator space.

● Show Shirts have arrived. Students need to purchase their shirts before the first home football game.  This is part of your uniform.  Shirts are $12, if paying by check, please make the check out to the school.

● Miss Essex needs volunteers to provide pre-cut or sliced fruit and cookies. Students prefer watermelon and apple slices.  Any kind of cookie will be gladly appreciated and eaten.

● Jungle Show Items – The Band Booster group is looking for items to be donated for our “jungle” set.  If you are willing to donate fake plants, trees, moss, bark, paint, paint brushes, or ANYTHING at all that you think we can build a jungle out of, we will be very happy to take that off of your hands.

● What else should I bring to camp with me?
○ Instrument, Music, Pencil(s)

○ Sunscreen and bug spray.

○ Sunglasses, hat, water bottle.

○ Positive attitude; strong work ethic.

● What should I wear?
○ Clothing that breathes well.  It’s August and hot.

○ Old sneakers that you aren’t afraid to get dirty.  It wouldn’t hurt to bring  an extra pair of socks and shoes, so you don’t walk around with wet feet all day.

○ Hat and sunglasses are always good options.

Bluegill Frolic Parade
The “Wildcat” band will be marching in the Bluegill Frolic Parade on Saturday, August 15. Report time is 9:15am and the parade will begin at 10am, leaving from the Elementary school.  This year the theme is celebrating 250 years of the United States.  That means WILDCAT BAND you get to Red, White and Blue yourself up! The crazier the better.  Prizes will be given to the best dressed.  Keep in mind that you still MUST follow the school dress code AND wear appropriate footwear.  NOT CROCS! I don’t care if they are “patriotic” crocs.  NO!

*Questions about any of the events above, please contact Band Director Katy Essex via email.
