For the third year in a row, the MHS varsity boys basketball team opened the season against non-conference opponent Lawton, Tuesday, November 26. Unfortunately, the third time was not the charm as the ‘Cats came away with a 43-51 loss to the visiting Blue Devils, following season opener losses to Lawton in 2023 and 2022.
Coach Troy Kahler started two seniors, Parker Adams and Beau Ferguson, junior Jamarion Robinson, and sophomores Abram Coffey and Cale Hackenberg.
In the first quarter, both teams were held to single digit scoring with the ‘Cats leading at the end of one, 7-2. The Blue Devils outpaced the ‘Cats in the second and third, 16-10 and 18-11, respectively, while both teams scored 15 in the fourth.
The rim of the basket was a pesky problem for Marcellus after a number of shots just refused to fall. If a fraction of those would’ve stayed the course and a couple of turnovers had been avoided . . . but, hey, that’s basketball.
Nonetheless, the ‘Cats played a solid, competitive game against a tough competitor while showing promise for an exciting season ahead.
Abram Coffey led the scoring with 13 points, 9 of those from three-pointers, followed by Parker Adams with 11 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals. Jamarion Robinson Robinson is a strong addition to this year’s squad as the junior added 9 points, and collected 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks. Beau Ferguson and Matt Lehew each tossed in 5.
The JV ‘Cats fell to the Blue Devils, 29-44, despite Martelle Enright contributing 17 points and 6 steals. Also scoring were Javonne Robinson with 5, Zade Tyzska added three on a long distance shot, and Brae Newcomb tossed in two.
The ‘Cats welcome longtime rival Decatur to Marcellus on Friday, December 6. The varsity Raiders lost their season opener to Martin, 32-56. JV tips off at 6:00pm, followed by the Varsity at approximately 7:30pm.
