The Marcellus Community Schools Board of education held their regular meeting on March 14, 2022. The Board took action on several agenda items.
In a unanimous vote, the board approved a proposed Agriscience program. The proposal called for the addition of an Agriscience teaching position as well as the creation of an Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter. Mikki Spagnoli, Heritage Southwest ISD’s Director of Career and Technical Education and Postsecondary Options, presented information about the value and opportunities agriscience and FFA can add for Marcellus students. It is anticipated that the district will implement the programs this fall.
Program objectives include:
1. Increase understanding of the agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource related businesses and the relationship between agriculture and society.
2. Develop a closer working relationship between the school and the agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource business community.
3. Expand the curriculum base for the students and community of Marcellus Community Schools.
4. Develop the skills and competence necessary to succeed in agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource related business.
5. Prepare students for careers in the agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource industry and advanced study at the post-secondary level.
6. Develop leadership, personal, and communication skills necessary in agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource careers.
7. Promote contextual and practical applications of the academic core areas of Mathematics, Science, Communication Arts and Social Studies.
In other action items, the board approved the addition of an assistant track coach position. While Marcellus has been fortunate to have an unpaid volunteer assistant over the past few years, the number of student athletes participating in track and field necessitates an additional paid position.
The board also joined all other Southwest 10 (SW10) conference schools in approving the addition of the Lawrence Tigers to the conference. According to the SW10 bylaws, at least 75% of the league’s school boards must approve. It is also noteworthy that the Mendon Hornets will leave the SW10 effective in 2023. We welcome the Tigers!
Finally, the 2022-23 school calendar was approved by a unanimous vote of the board. Students’ first day will be August 29 and there will be no school on the Friday or Monday surrounding Labor Day. Next year’s instructional calendar can be found on the district’s website.
In other news, kudos to the Volinia Outcomes School students and staff who hosted their annual drive through pancake breakfast last Saturday. The food was delicious and the group sold out of their delicious maple syrup!
