May 11 is National School Nurse Day. National School Nurse Day was established in 1972 to raise awareness of the importance of nurses in the educational setting and to recognize the significant contributions school nurses make to overall student achievement and success.
The school nurse does not simply deal with minor scrapes and bruises. A growing number of students enter school with chronic health conditions such as asthma, life-threatening allergies, diabetes, and seizure disorders. The school nurse helps students and families manage those challenges and can work with students’ healthcare providers to coordinate care. Schools are also seeing an increase in mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression. School nurses, along with social workers and counselors, work with families to assess and address the potential mental and emotional needs of students. In addition, the school nurse also works with the district’s Wellness Committee, assists with cardiac emergency plans, and facilitates CPR training and MI Heart Safe Certifications. Â
Marcellus Community Schools is fortunate to offer nursing services for our students this year. In January, the district secured grant funding to help support the part-time position. I am grateful for Karen Warner who passionately serves in the district’s nursing role.Â

Warner is a registered nurse with over twenty-eight years of experience. This district is abundantly blessed to have found an exceptionally talented and qualified individual to join our school team! Many thanks to Mrs. Warner for her service and contribution to the students of Marcellus Community Schools.
