Inside the Marcellus Community Schools

August 16, 2022 By Nanette Pauley Leave a Comment

Over the summer break, the Marcellus Board of Education approved district participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).  I am thrilled to announce that all Marcellus students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch during the 2022-23 school year!

Throughout the pandemic, federal waivers permitted schools to provide free meals to all students, regardless of income.  However, those waivers do not extend to the 2022-23 school year.  Thus, the Marcellus Board of Education resolved to continue offering free meals through the CEP program.  District officials made application for the program and were approved.

Under CEP, parents do not need to complete a free/reduced meal application.  Instead, parents are asked to complete and return a one page Household Report.  In order to ensure continued district participation in CEP, it is essential that parents return the Household Report.

Marcellus Community Schools is also thrilled to offer two new, on site, career- technical programs to benefit students this fall.  Late last school year, the board of education approved the addition of middle and high school agriscience courses as well as an FFA chapter.  The Marcellus Agriscience and FFA programs will include study in hydroponics and aquaponics systems, raising broiler chickens and laying hens, and interactive livestock simulations to engage students and teach needed skills while providing career exploration opportunities.   Interested students and parents can meet the teacher and learn more about the new program at the August 23rd Open House.

Over the summer break, the board also approved the addition of another career-technical course designed for students who may be interested in education careers.   This Educator Exploratory program invites pupils to explore the teaching profession through a combination of direct instruction and clinical experience.  We are excited to provide these new and engaging learning opportunities for our kids!
