Well, it seems easy to say…well duh, Turbo! They just destroyed TCU for their second consecutive National Title. But my question is, does winning two titles make you a dynasty? Let’s not forget that Nick Saban is still coaching and we have seen other teams make a run like this so if Georgia is indeed a dynasty, what separates them from the other contenders?
Let’s address the time frame here. We are talking about a two-year time span here. When I think dynasty I think about like a 10 year span so I think that is the first hiccup in the Georgia dynasty conversation. Now before you light this paper on fire on my lawn, I am not suggesting that Georgia is done being a powerhouse…all I am saying is that we might need to revisit this conversation. However, Georgia did something unprecedented Monday night. They are the first team in CFP history to win back-to-back titles. In this day and age of the transfer portal and the NIL, that feat is quite impressive in and of itself. College coaches are not only recruiting to get players to the program but also to keep them in the program.
So, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs sit atop the College Football landscape yet again but will they remain there next year as well? We saw Nick Saban be the king of college football for what seemed like forever, but did he leave a blueprint for other coaches to follow? Saban is known for having an amazing defense, that is extremely deep at all positions, and an efficient offense. Saban is also known for being an unbelievable recruiter. This is probably his best asset because you can’t play the player if he isn’t on campus. We have seen other teams try and use this blueprint and had success. We have seen Clemson in particular have a massive run and win a couple titles, even beating Saban! But would you consider Clemson a dynasty as well? In my opinion I would say no. They are very good, but they have had some down years here lately. I mean down years for Clemson’s standards. Let’s not get crazy! LOL! But to be a dynasty you have to be elite. You have to be the best team for an extended period of time. But I do believe that Georgia will be highly ranked going into next season even with their quarterback Stetson Bennett leaving for the NFL. This team reloaded quite nicely losing a ton of their players last year, but this will be Smart’s biggest test yet. Georgia has been a good team but always seemed like they were a quarterback away from being amazing. Bennett gave them that player, so it is going to be interesting to see if they fall back to that level or if they continue dominance.
After all of that I do not believe Georgia is a dynasty…yet. I think they are on the cusp of something very special. I know everything will change once the playoffs opens up to 12 teams but I think the way Kirby Smart has gone about things this team is set up to win and win a lot! And at the end of the day, to be the best you have to beat the best so everyone that is on Georgia’s schedule has them circled.
