Layman’s Corner

Q:  Amy writes:  Mathew 24:35 says that God’s words are eternal. That being the case, why has there been over the years a constant attack on the Bible along with a fierce effort to destroy it?

A:   Great question Amy, thank you for taking the time to email your question in. For our readers, Matthew 24:35 says: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” The hatred of the Sacred Scriptures has always been fueled by Satan’s hatred toward Christ. The Bible points out Satan’s deceptions and hatred for Jesus while at the same time it reveals God’s love for us and the story of salvation through Jesus Christ for fallen man. The Bible is a message of hope, the theme from Genesis to Revelation is redemptive. It is a narrative of Christ’s unceasing love for fallen mankind and a record of His dealings to draw them back into communion with Him.

Christ pointed to the Scriptures as of unquestionable authority, He tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The infidel French writer Voltaire, who lived from 1694 to 1778, once boastingly said: “I am weary of hearing people repeat that twelve men established the Christian religion. I will prove that one man may suffice to overthrow it.” Obviously, Voltaire was wrong – where there were hundreds of copies of the Bible in his day there are millions of copies now.  In the words of an early Reformer concerning the Christian church: “The Bible is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.” Also, Says the Lord, “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment thou shalt condemn.” Isaiah 54:17.”  “The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8.

“God will have a people upon the earth to maintain the Bible, and the Bible only, as the standard of all doctrines and the basis of all reforms. The opinions of learned men, the deductions of science, the creeds or decisions of ecclesiastical councils, as numerous and discordant as are the churches which they represent, the voice of the majority–not one nor all of these should be regarded as evidence for or against any point of religious faith. Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain “Thus saith the Lord” in its support. Many are taught to accept the teachings of the Bible as interpreted by the church.  There are thousands who dare receive nothing, however plainly revealed in Scripture, that is contrary to their creed or the established teaching of their church. The Bible is full of warnings against false teachers, yet many are ready to commit the keeping of their souls to the clergy. The Bible should never be studied without prayer. We should day by day study the Bible diligently, weighing every thought and comparing scripture with scripture.” The Great Controversy 595 to 601”.     “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”. Psalm 119:105. Satan’s attacks on the Bible will continue until the Second Advent (coming) of Christ but God’s word is unchanging and unmovable. Hope this helps Amy.
