Q: Tim Writes: “I was reading the Old Testament Book of Exodus and in chapter 25:8 the Lord gives instruction to Moses to build Him a sanctuary, “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” What was the purpose of the earthly sanctuary?
A: Excellent question Tim. There is so much that the sanctuary teaches us but here is the focal point. The sanctuary the Lord instructed Moses to salvation. The earthly priesthood ceased when Christ – the Lamb of God died on the Cross. We now look to Jesus as our High Priest and the minister of the new covenant in the Heavenly Sanctuary, not a tabernacle in Jerusalem. We read in Hebrews 9:24 – “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
Jesus now ministers in the heavenly sanctuary as our High Priest, advocate and judge, interceding in our behalf during this period known as the investigative judgement. His Priestly ministry will soon close – then he will take off His priestly robe and put on His kingly robe. Revelation 22:12 -14 tells us about this moment: “And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city.” We read in 1 Thessalonians 4:13 to 18 about the second coming of Christ and what will take place at this climatic event – where every eye will see Him. We need to be ready to meet our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by first accepting Jesus as our Saviour while there is still time to do so.
