Track & Field Regionals
On Friday, May 19, the girls’ track teams competed in the division 4 region 34 finals. Senior Brooklyn VanTilburg saved the best for last; the 300 M hurdler ran a career best (53.37) to finish second and qualify for her first ever state finals. Earlier in the afternoon VanTilburg also qualified for state in the high jump as an additional qualifier jumping (4’-10”) and placed fourth in the 100 m hurdles (18.41). Junior Talan Hiemstra qualified for her third consecutive state finals in pole vault with a personal record (8’-3”). Along with Hiemstra qualifying in pole vault sophomore, Madisyn Harrison qualified for state in the pole vault (8’-6”). Harrison brought home the only regional title this season. Layna Cardella had a busy day bringing home three medals; Cardella finished fourth in long jump (14’-6 ½”), fifth in the 200 (29.19), and sixth in the 400 (1:07.62)

SW10 Conference Championships
Tuesday May 23, 2023, the girls’ track team competed in the SW10 Conference Championships. Brooklyn VanTilburg came away with multiple All-Conference honors. VanTilburg was honorable mention All-Conference in the high jump (4’-6”), 100 m hurdles (18.63), and in the 300 m hurdles (54.37). Talan Hiemstra was First Team All-Conference, by winning the pole vault with a vault of eight feet. Madisyn Harrison was also All-Conference Second Team with a jump of eight feet, but she had more misses at previous attempts. Other Marcellus athletes to earn All-Conference honorable mention were Ellie Pachay in the pole vault (7’-6”) and Layna Cardella in the long jump (14’- 1 ½”).

MITCA “Team State” Championship Meet at Mt. Pleasant H.S.

To attend this meet, sponsored by the Michigan Track Coaches Association, each team must receive an invitation to compete. Marcellus was fortunate to be one out of 152 teams in division 4. Thanks to an experienced core of returning athletes the girls’ track teams were invited to attend this prestigious meet. Many of the girls’ Team members had their best performances of the year in the meet, and a few were able to finish in the top 8 in their events. Starting the meet right, sophomore Layna Cardella, set new personal records while finishing 5th in the 100 (13.84) and later on in the day 2nd in the 200 (28.54). Highlighting the end of the meet sophomore, Madisyn Harrison, finished third and at the same time set a new school record with a vault of nine feet one inch.
