ย  โ€œNot our nightโ€ is what Head Coach Christian Hutson stated after the MHS girls varsity basketball team fell to the Gobles Tigers, Tuesday night on the road, 22-39. The loss came just four days after a big road win against Comstock, 73-33.ย

Gobles improved their record to 6-2 with the win while Marcellus is holding steady, at this writing, with a respectable 4-3.  Junior Emma Melendez once again led the โ€˜Cats in scoring tossing in 11 points against the Tigers. Senior Carlyn Deer, who suited up just before the holidays, added 5. Also scoring were sophomores Kerrianne Oโ€™Donnell and Hannah Sharp, who added two apiece, and ninth grader Akoyi Goodlow contributed two.

Sophomore Emma Caudill was tough under the boards accounting for 9 rebounds, while Oโ€™Donnell led in assists with four. Melendez tallied four of the โ€˜Catsโ€™ 11 steals.

The match-up with the Comstock Colts on Thursday, January 8, the first of five in a row away games, was a different contest altogether.  Marcellus dominated the game scoring 10 in the first, 20 in the second, 17 in the third and 26 in the fourth.

Melendez did what Melendez does โ€“ lead in point production. She produced a whopping 29 in the โ€˜Catsโ€™ 73-33 victory. Oโ€™Donnell tossed in 18, including two buckets from long range. Caudill added 15, followed by Sharp with 7, and two each from Deer and senior exchange student Mayu Uga.

Caudill and Deer were tough under the boards with Caudill snagging 9 rebounds and Deer 7. Oโ€™Donnell led in steals with seven.

The visit from the White Pigeon Chiefs, Tuesday, January 6, proved to be a tough battle with White Pigeon taking home the โ€œW,โ€ 21-38. It was all about defense โ€“ the Chiefsโ€™ defense.

White Pigeon was very, very stingy allowing Marcellus to score only four points in the first half, six in the third, and 11 in the fourth. It wasnโ€™t for lack of effort on the โ€˜Catsโ€™ behalf. The Chiefs have a seasoned squad with a starting line-up that includes four seniors and one junior. Still down two starters, Marcellusโ€™s starting five against White Pigeon included three sophomores, one junior and one senior exchange student.

The Chiefsโ€™ defense shutout Melendez allowing her only two points. Oโ€™Donnell tossed in 9, while Caudill contributed 8 and Sharp 2. The whistle wasnโ€™t much in Marcellusโ€™s favor either with White Pigeon being assessed only 1 foul in the first half to the โ€˜Catsโ€™ 7.

Next up for the girls varsity is yet another road game, Tuesday, January 13, at Bloomingdale, followed by trips to Decatur, Friday, January 16, and Constantine, Tuesday, January 20. They return home, Friday, January 23, for homecoming against Hartford.

MHS Boys Varsity Basketball
Boys varsity Head Coach Troy Kahler could probably use a case of Tums on the sidelines this season. The team is still looking for a win after 10 straight losses since December 5.

At this writing, the boys were hosting the 6-3 Bloomingdale Cardinals, Tuesday, January 13, after falling on the road to the Gobles Tigers the night before, 27-48.

ย ย  The undefeated Tigers allowed the โ€˜Cats zero points in the first quarter and kept them in single digit scoring in the second and third. Marcellus scored the majorityย of their points in the fourth.

The Robinson brothers, Jamarion and Javonne, shared the top of the leaderboard with 6 apiece, followed by 3 apiece from Brae Newcomb, Martelle Enright, and Matteo Vehre. Scoring 2 points each were Aiden Cadwell, Gage Rumsey and Elias Torres.

On Thursday, January 8, Marcellus traveled to Comstock for the second of three road games. The scoring was somewhat balanced between the two with the Colts holding off the โ€˜Cats, 45-58.

Senior Jamarion Robinson tossed in 18, followed by Javonne Robinson with 8, and Matt Jansen with 7. Tossing in 4 each were Matt Lehew and Brae Newcomb. Aiden Cadwell and Martelle Enright each contributed 2.

Marcellus started their three-game road schedule against the White Pigeon Chiefs, Tuesday, January 6, falling to White Pigeon, 42-63. Jamarion Robinson once again led all scorers with 18, followed by Javonne Robinson with 12, Jansen contributed 7 and Cadwell tossed in 5.

ย ย  Next up is a trip to Decatur, Friday, January 16, then a week off before hosting the Hartford Huskies for homecoming, Friday, January 23.ย
