Michigan Acreage Summary

Michigan farmers planted fewer corn acres and more soybean acres in 2024 than they did in 2023, according to Marlo D. Johnson,Director, USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. Cold and unusually wet spring weather hindered fieldwork and planting in Michigan. Warm, drier conditions returned around mid-May, accelerating progress. By June 2, both corn planting and emergencewere ahead of the 5-year averages. Michigan corn growers planted 2.15 million acres, down 250,000 from last year. Harvested acresof corn for grain were set at 1.81 million acres, also down 250,000 from last year.

Michigan soybean growers planted 2.25 million acres, up 210,000 acres from last year. Growers expect to harvest 2.24 million acres of soybeans in 2024.

Winter wheat growers planted 420,000 acres in Michigan, down 180,000 acres from 2023. Harvested acres of winter wheat for grain are anticipated to be 375,000 acres, down 185,000 acres from last year.

Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2024 is estimated at 91.5 million acres, down 3 percent or 3.17 million acres from last year. This represents the eighth highest planted acreage in the United States since 1944. Compared with last year,planted acreage is expected to be down or unchanged in 31 of the 48 estimating States. Area harvested for grain, at 83.4 million acres, is down 4 percent from last year.

U.S. soybean planted area for 2024 is estimated at 86.1 million acres, up 3 percent from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 24 of the 29 estimating States.

The 2024 winter wheat planted area, at 33.8 million acres, is down 8 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the previousestimate. Of this total, about 24.1 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 6.14 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.59 million acres are White Winter.
