Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale Returns August 8–10, 2025!

The US-12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale: A 200-Mile Treasure Hunt Across Southern Michigan

Get ready, bargain hunters and treasure seekers! The beloved US-12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale—affectionately known as Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale—returns Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10, 2025. Spanning over 200 miles from New Buffalo to Detroit, this annual tradition invites thousands to explore the unique communities and scenic landscapes that line one of Michigan’s most historic highways.

Each year, residents, businesses, and organizations along US-12 set up shop in yards, fields, parking lots, and roadside stands to offer everything from antiques and collectibles to homemade goods, fresh produce, furniture, dishware, and more. Some areas host clusters of vendors, while others offer a more relaxed, small-town charm—but everywhere, there’s something to discover.

Now celebrating over 20 years of community connection, the US-12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale is more than just a shopping event—it’s a cultural road trip. The trail follows Michigan’s second-oldest highway, established in 1825, which has long served as a historic route for the Sauk Tribe, pioneers, stagecoaches, and early automobile travelers journeying between Chicago and Detroit. Before I-94, US-12 was the way across southern Michigan, and it still beckons travelers who prefer the scenic route.

Winding past vintage motor inns, drive-in theaters, classic diners, farmland, and small towns, the US-12 Heritage Trail is one of Michigan’s 16 designated State Scenic Byways, recognized for its cultural and historic significance. This event is designed to draw travelers off the interstates and into the heart of the region—encouraging them to explore, shop, and connect with the people and places that make this area unique.

How to Get Involved:

  • Host a Sale: Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to register their sale for free at www.us12heritagetrail.org. Registered sales will appear on the interactive online map and printable listings—making it easier for shoppers to find you!
  • Looking for a Spot? If you don’t live along US-12, don’t worry! Vendor spaces are available for rent along the route. Check the website for available locations or watch for local signs offering spaces.
  • Offer a Vendor Space: Have a space to rent to others? Register it on the website and help fellow sellers join the fun!

Whether you’re a shopper searching for vintage gems or a seller looking to downsize or showcase homemade goods, this weekend-long event offers something for everyone. Over the years, the sale has attracted attention from across the Midwest, drawing return visitors who cherish the combination of deals, nostalgia, and Michigan charm.

A Reminder for Safety:
As excitement builds, we remind all participants and travelers to drive slowly and stay alert, especially for pedestrians. Please be cautious when parking, walking, and shopping along the highway.
