The December 9, 2024, Newberg Township General Meeting was called to order at 7:00pm at the Newberg Township Fire Department. Present: Covey, Blackburn, Harvey, Griffiths, and Duff. Motion made by Covey, supported by Griffiths, to approve the minutes from the November 11, 2024, General Meeting. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Reports:
Assessor- nothing to report Ordinance: Not present.
Ambulance- Director Schrader reported twenty-two (22) calls for the month of November; fifteen (15) Newberg, two (2) Porter with the remaining mutual aid in the area. Last month EDP Renewables presented a check for $5,000.00 as a donation to the ambulance department.
Fire: Chief Forrester reported six (6) calls for the month of November; three (3) Newberg, two (2) Porter and one (1) mutual aid Porter.
Sexton: Blackburn shared one ash burial for the month of November. Building: Report for November was read by Clerk Duff.
Treasurer: Report available at the meeting or by emailing treasurer. Treasurer Blackburn shared information about a drop box for the township hall. People will leave tax bills in the entryway and she would like to have a drop box that is more secure. Motion made by Blackburn, supported by Harvey, to purchase a drop box for the township hall to not exceed $100.00. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
County Commission: Not present.
Public Comment: Ali Stano from EDP Renewables gave an update regarding the solar project and asked if we had any questions.
Correspondence: Nothing to report. Announcements: Nothing to report.
Unfinished Business:
New township hall: Clerk Duff shared the updated print for the new township hall and asked if any changes needed. Discussion was had regarding the drawing. The board decided they would like to have the building 48×72 and make sure the bathrooms are handicap accessible approved.
New Business:
Bair Lake Assessments: Trustee Griffiths shared updates regarding the Bair Lake Special Assessment.
Fiscal Budget: Motion made by Blackburn, supported by Griffiths, to amend the 2024/25 budget by transferring $200 from Assessor Supplies to Assessor Professional Contract Services in the General Fund. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Trustee Griffiths: Motion made by Covey, supported by Harvey, to allow Kieth Griffiths, Trustee, to be on the Newberg EMS and the Newberg Fire Department while serving on the township board as a trustee. Motion carried unanimously. Griffiths did not take part in this vote.
Issue at current township hall: Trustee Harvey stated that the small covering for the water pump is falling apart and may need replaced. Also, the screen door to the entrance of the hall will not stay shut and needs replaced. Harvey will look into getting prices for these repairs.
Update on EMS flyer sent out with tax bills: Griffiths reported they have had a couple people reply to the flyer sent out in tax bills asking for EMS volunteers.
Reschedule Road Tour: Covey will contact the Road Commission to reschedule the road tour this week.
Bills to Pay: Motion made by Covey, supported by Griffiths to pay the bills for the month of December in the amount of $17,490.89. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Public Comment: Resident asked questions about road projects and concerns on Hoffman St. Another resident gave comments regarding the ARPA money and new township hall build. Sheriff Behnke shared on goings in the Cass County area.
Landfill Passes: Discussion was had regarding landfill passes for the 2025 year. Motion made by Duff, supported by Griffiths, to continue issuing two landfill passes per parcel with up to six passes per property owner allowed for multiple parcels for the 2025 calendar year. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Motion made by Covey, supported by Griffiths, to adjourn the meeting at 8:36pm. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
