Newberg Township General Meeting, October 13, 2025

The Newberg Township Board met at the Newberg Township Fire Department in regular session on October 13th, 2025, at 7:00pm.

Supervisor Covey led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Present: Duff, Griffiths, Harvey, Covey and Blackburn Absent:

Additions/Deletions to Agenda
Nothing at this time

Approval of the Agenda
Motion made by Duff, supported by Griffiths, to approve the agenda for the October 13th General Meeting. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.

Approval of Minutes
Motion made by Duff, supported by Harvey, to approve the minutes from the September 8th General Meeting and the September 24th Special Meeting. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.

Reports
Assessor: Nothing to report

Ordinance: Nothing to report

Ambulance: Director Griffiths reported a total of twenty-nine (29) calls for the month of September.

Fire: Chief Forrester reported four (4) calls for the month of September. Sexton: Nothing to report

Building: Read by Clerk Duff

Treasurer: Motion made by Blackburn, supported by Griffiths, to move $846.94 from convention/training expense to supervisor supplies. Motion carried unanimously by voice vote.

County Commission: Commissioner Northrop shared that there is not much going on at the county currently. Some things are on hold at this time because of the federal government.

Solar Project: EDP Renewables shared information about the solar project updates. Discussion was had regarding the decommissioning plan and the development plan agreements.

Public Comment (non-agenda items)
Under Sheriff was present at the meeting to share ongoings in the sheriff’s department and county.

Public Comment made by resident on Hoffman Street. Shared road concerns on Hoffman Street east of M-40.

Correspondence/Announcements
Public Accuracy Test October 23rd 2025 at 5:00pm at the Fire Department November 4th 2025 Special Election 7am-8pm at the Fire Department

Unfinished Business
1. New Township Hall: Discussion was had regarding the process on the hall. It was suggested to see if the builder can give us a monthly report of what has been done and what will be done during the month.

2. Township Lake Ordinances: Discussion was had regrading dock concerns in the township.

3. Harwood Lake Cemetery: Nothing new to report.

New Business
1. M-40 Race Track Fireworks: The race track blew up 26 gallons of gasoline that was not fireworks during their firework show the last weekend in September. This was not part of the fire work permit but the Newberg Fire Department was present.

2. State Budget: Blackburn shared that the state past the budget and the township will be losing $8,000.00 from the new budget. We might get $2,220.00 towards public safety. We will have to be aware of this moving into our new budget year.

3. Drain Assessment: The Drain Commissioner sent us a bill for the township that is due the end of March 2026 for the the township portion. Blackburn will contact the Drain Commission for a payment plan to be paid in 3 payments for the township. Moiton made by Blackburn, supported by Harvey, to add $24,600.00 to the drains account under the general fund. Motion carried unanimously upon voice vote.

4. Driskel Lake Hotel: Supervisor Covey shared he contacted the owner who is redoing the hotel located on Driskel Lake and renovating the property to use as a short term rental.

5.2026 Early Voting Location: Clerk Duff shared the county will be holding early voting for all townships for the State Primary and State General Election next year. Early voting will be held at the Cass County VFW for 9 days of early voting along with one day set up and tear down. This would cost each township $1,600.00. Motion made by Griffiths, supported by Harvey, to approve the cost of $800 per election cycle to cover the cost for the 11 days of early voting per election for Newberg Township. Motion carried unanimously upon voice vote.

Bills to Pay
Motion made by Covey, supported by Griffiths, to pay the bills in the amount of $34,398.04 for the month of October. Motion carried unanimously upon voice vote.

Public Comment – None at this time.

Adjournment
Motion made by Covey, supported by Harvey, to adjourn the meeting at 8:14pm. Motion carried unanimously upon voice vote.
