Author, Cassandra Clare wrote, “One must always be careful of books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us,” and this week’s continuing list of new non-fiction certainly holds that power.

Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals by Laurie Zaleski is the story of a daughter’s love, filled with promises kept, dreams fulfilled, and animals lost and found.

Every Good Boy Does Fine: A Love Story, in Music Lessons by Jeremy Denk shares the most meaningful lessons of his life, and tries to repay a debt to his teachers. He also reminds us that we must never stop asking questions about music and its purposes: consolation, an armor against disillusionment, pure pleasure, a diversion, a refuge, and a vehicle for empathy.

Becoming Forrest: One Man’s Epic Run Across America by Rob Pope details how a veterinarian left his job in pursuit of a dream – to become the first person ever to complete the epic fictional run undertaken by Forrest Gump. After his momma urged him to do one thing in life that made a difference, he flew to Alabama, put on his running shoes, and sped off into the wilderness.

Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative by Melissa Febos discusses how to confront the emotional, psychological, and physical work of writing about our most intimate lives.

Nowhere for Very Long: The Unexpected Road to an Unconventional Life by Brianna Madia is the true story of a woman learning and unlearning, from backroads to breakdowns, from married to solo, and finally, from lost to found to lost again … this time, on purpose.

What Kind of Ancestor Do You Want to Be? edited by John Hausdoerffer et al. demands a return to the force of lineage—to spiritual, social, and ecological connections across time.
