National Day of Prayer is May 5: The National Day of Prayer will be observed locally this year at the Marcellus United Methodist Church on Thursday May 5 at !2noon.  If the weather is uncooperative, we will pray in the Fellowship Hall. Afterwards there will be a boxed lunch available. Everyone is welcomed to attend and pray with us. Or if you need prayer, please come and we will pray with you.

The theme this year is “Exalt the Lord who has established us” with the supporting scripture from Colossians 2:6-7:6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7: rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

In 1952, President Truman made the National Day of Prayer an annual observance, stating: “In times of national crisis when we are striving to strengthen the foundations of peace…we stand in special need of Divine support.”

In April of 1970, President Richard Nixon had the nation observe a Day of Prayer for Apollo 13 astronauts. On May 5, 1988, President Reagan made the National Day of Prayer the first Thursday in May, saying: “Americans in every generation have turned to their Maker in prayer…We have acknowledged…our dependence on Almighty God.”

The Marcellus United Methodist Church is hosting this prayer time in partnership with Trinity Bible Church and Wakelee United Methodist Church.  We hope other local churches will join with us in praying for our community, our nation and our global neighbors.
