March 20 – 26
As temperatures rise, the chance for severe weather increases. In order to help prepare residents for the possibility of tornadoes, floods, high winds, and other weather patterns that could disrupt daily lives, Michigan is observing Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 20 – 26.
The observance includes the Statewide Tornado Drill being conducted, Wednesday, March 23, at 1:00pm.
According to the Michigan State Police MIREADY program, Michigan averages 15 tornadoes each year. Tornadoes develop rapidly, with little advanced warning. The average lead time for a tornado warning is 10 to 15 minutes, and winds can reach over 200 mph. These factors are why Michigan residents are encouraged to prepare and make a plan before a tornado strikes.
The best defense against a tornado is preparation: identify a safe room or shelter at home, work, or other locations you frequent; build an emergency kit and make family communications plans, sign up for your community’s warning system, listen to NOAA Weather Radio or commercial radio, and be alert to changing weather conditions.
If you are caught outside or in cell service purgatory, look for these danger signs:
Dark, often greenish sky
Large hail
A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
Loud roar, similar to a freight train
If you see approaching storms or any of the danger signs, be prepared to take shelter immediately.
