Justin Ware: …
Katy Essex: Black Bird by J.T. Bishop. Conclusion in the Daniels and Remalla detective series. Story ends leaving room for a follow-up series.
Sarah Essex: Finders Keepers by Stuart Woods and Brian Battle. Another clever Stone Barrington novel. Fast read and always fun.
Kay McAdam: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. This book is literature. A gripping, mesmerizing, oftimes horrifying blend of historical, horror and literary fiction. Set in 1950s Florida, it tracks the story of Robbie Stephens, Jr., a 12-year-old black child sent to the Gracetown School for Boys for kicking an older white boy, son of an influential and well-to-do landowner. While the adult authorities and landowner knew it was a minor action, Robbie was sent to the reformatory to remind him of his place in society. The story is a raw, honest depiction of the Jim Crow south. Plus there are haints (ghosts) aplenty. Similar to Sebastian Junger’s The Perfect Storm, the characters are determined to get through their trials alive while readers know the truth . . . or do we? A must read. . .
