No this isn’t an article that is going to bash Ohio State but rather I am asking the fans of Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame to join forces. Even though OSU lost to Indiana in the BIG10 Title Game, they are still favorites to win the whole thing, so their bandwagon is quite full, I am sure. But hear me out.
I am not forgetting about Indiana by any means. If you want to hitch your wagon to them by all means. They went from the worst college football team in history to last year making the playoffs and this year winning the BIG10 and earning the top seed in the tournament while going undefeated. For those that want to back a team that has never been there before, I completely understand and I know for a fact a few Hoosier fans read this and for those reasons are hard to root against.
But here is the story I want to present to you and ask that you join me in this adventure. Let’s talk about Ole Miss. I know, we all hate SEC teams, well most of us anyways, and normally I would agree with you. There are things about this team that I am getting behind because not only would it be awesome, but it would be one of the best and funniest stories in quite some time, if not ever. This Ole Miss team is 11-1 and currently the 6 seed in the playoff. They are set to play Tulane on 12/20. Just a week or so ago, their coach, Lane Kiffin left the team to go and coach LSU. In some circumstances, the school would let the coach be able to coach the team until they lose but Ole Miss told Kiffin if he left, he would leave immediately. There wasn’t much known as far as what coaches would stay and which would leave with Kiffin. It became known that he would take all of his offensive coaches so where does this leave Ole Miss? One of their offensive coaches was allowed to stay and coach the team during the playoffs. Some might recognize the name, Charlie Weiss Jr. Kiffin said that he felt he could be more successful at LSU because recruiting is going to be easier. Ole Miss said they would match any contract that LSU offered so money wasn’t the determining factor.
Let’s talk Playoffs. I am pleased that the committee didn’t leave out Ole Miss because there is a bylaw that says if a team loses an important player or coach prior to the playoff they can be omitted from the tournament like they did with Florida State a few years ago. But since they are in, they are set to host a home playoff game. I will say that the weather should be much better than those home games last season where we saw South Bend and Columbus host those games and it was COLD! But Ole Miss beat Tulane earlier in the season 45-10 which leaves them 16.5 point favorites. If they beat Tulane again, they would be headed to a rematch against Georgia, that beat them 43-35 earlier. This is a team they can beat setting them up to make a realistic run for the title.
Why is this important? How ironic and honestly funny, would it be if this Ole Miss team wins the entire thing? A team that their coach bailed on to go to a conference rival because of a “recruiting advantage” when he had a winning team already. Lastly, the quarterback for Ole Miss is Trinidad Chambliss, a transfer from Ferris State and is from Grand Rapids. So, let’s all hitch our trailer to this Ole Miss train and root for an amazing storyline and a local dude!
