Turbo Talks Sports: Turbo’s Golf Guide 2026

June 23, 2026 By Ryan "Turbo" Jackson Leave a Comment

I though this would be fitting considering summer is officially here and the US Open was last weekend so let’s talk some golf.  This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart.  In high school I worked at Olde Mill Golf Course in Schoolcraft and had buddies who worked at Pine View so, needless to say, golf was an almost everyday thing for at least two summers of my life.

In 2026 we have access to the most information, reviews, and critiques of anytime in human history.  The golf industry isn’t a stranger to this whatsoever.  We have YouTube videos showing us the newest and greatest equipment.  They also do course reviews and even reviews on the food at the course.  This is one of the many reasons golf has seen such a flood of new golfers come on the scene.  As far as popularity is concerned, golf has never been healthier.  In my opinion it is more rare to find someone who doesn’t golf than does and that is a drastic switch from when I was growing up.

We have also seen the PGA do an excellent job at choosing great courses to have the majors at as well as promoting the great players on tour.  Players have even gone on YouTube channels to not only display their talents but to show their personalities which to me is far more entertaining than the actual golf play.  Never before have we seen this level of access to these players.  Heck, Tiger Woods has even been on a couple channels!!! Add to the golf pros, these channels are getting celebrities like athletes, actors, and even other influencers come on their channels.  When you get these non-professional golfers in situations like that, you get them out of their comfort zones, and it is usually pretty darn entertaining!

So, with all of that said, let’s get into the darn golf guide.  I don’t think most Michiganders realize how lucky we are when it comes to actual courses.  We have little 9-hole courses all they way up to courses that have hosted Majors and everything in between.  We have courses up and down the Lake Michigan coast, private courses, and local municipal courses.  Now not all are great, but I think when you are packing your clubs up after a round at almost any course locally you are very satisfied.  I know there are many folks that get a membership to one course and play that course as much as they can.  There is nothing wrong with that at all.  I prefer to play many different courses because each one has its own charm.  But, to each their own!

Here is my recommendation to any golfer, whether just starting out or you’ve turned a few rounds in your day.  Step one.  Find some golf friends.  The most fun I ever had playing was when I was bartending. I would go out during the day with some of the retired guys and we would go do a couple different courses each week.  If you don’t have any golf friends, join some local Facebook groups.  These are key to not only meeting new people, but to see where scrambles are so you can get out and enjoy the game.  Equipment suggestions?  I know there are a TON of different options out there but just get some clubs.  Get some balls.  Does brand matter?  Nope.  99% of us aren’t good enough for the equipment to actually make a difference.  Shop with your budget, not the newest, greatest thing.  Don’t have money for a round?  Hit the driving range.  Just get some swings in.  The game isn’t about how much money you can spend, it is about getting outside, being with your friends, and enjoying your day!
