US-131 to be closed for railroad work south of Schoolcraft July 15-29

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ­- Starting Monday, July 15, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close US-131 in each direction south of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, to rebuild a railroad crossing. This work is part of the two-year, $51 million project to rebuild and repave 13.4 miles of US-131 from the Rocky River in Three Rivers, St. Joseph County, to Shaver Road in Schoolcraft. 

US-131 will be closed from Monday, July 15, through Monday, July 29, with southbound traffic detoured via U Avenue, 8th Street and XY Avenue, while northbound traffic will be detoured via XY Avenue, Portage Road and U Avenue.

After the railroad crossing is rebuilt, southbound US-131 will reopen while the northbound detour remains in place as the project moves into the next scheduled phase of work.

The majority of this project’s funding ($35.3 million) is being made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state’s infrastructure. Based on economic modeling, this total $51 million investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 617 jobs.
