Vera Belle Gratkowski

July 15, 1934 –  August 22, 2023

Vera Belle Gratkowski, 89, of Decatur, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at her home in Decatur.

The family received guests Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Newell Chapel, Decatur. A celebration of life gathering will be held from 3-5pm, Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the VFW Hall, 560 N. Phelps St., Decatur. Interment will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be given to the VFW at the address above. Vera was born on July 15, 1934 in Hamilton Township, MI to Parmer and Mabel (Singleton) Flowers. She was a graduate of Decatur High School, class of 1951. Shortly after high school, Vera married the love of her life, Kazmer Gratkowski on August 11, 1951. 

Vera was a quintessential family woman, always putting the needs of her family before her own. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be missed for her selfless, caring, and supportive nature. Vera had a passion for collecting antique glassware and decorative chickens, which often led her to many antique stores and garage sales, which she enjoyed. She was also a life-time member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Decatur.

Vera is survived by her children, Allen (Leesa) Gratkowski, and Kim Gunther; her grandchildren, Brittney Gratkowski, and Greg (Courtney) Gunther; her great grandchildren, Alyssa, Brianna, Sophia, Michael, and Tiana; her siblings, Thomas (Betty) Flowers, and Leslie (Evelyn) Flowers; her loving caretaker, Diana (Curt) Ericksen; and her best friend of 53 years, Susie Henderson.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Kazmer Gratkowski; her granddaughter, Brooke Kastman-Gratkowski; and her parents.
