The News received the following statement just before going to print July 29.
Benton Harbor, Mich.— Wightman & Associates, Inc. is aware of the community’s concerns regarding the Main Street/Downtown Beautification Project in the Village of Marcellus. The Village engaged Wightman to design the improvements and Balkema Excavating to construct them. The Village expressed concern over the workmanship and accessibility of the improvements and provided more specific requests in correspondence to Wightman and Balkema on July 15, 2025.
Wightman is reviewing the claims and will work with both the Village and Balkema to identify the appropriate actions. Wightman is committed to fulfilling the requirements of its contract. We recognize that the closed sidewalks are an inconvenience to the community. Unfortunately, it is going to take some time to resolve these issues and ask for everyone’s continued patience.
Matt Davis, PE, Special Project Coordinator, with Wightman, stated, “We value the Village of Marcellus and its residents, and we understand the concerns that have been raised. As a firm committed to building strong communities, we are working in partnership with the Village to move this project forward with care, clarity, and accountability. We appreciate the community’s patience and engagement as we work together toward a successful outcome”.
